Strength Training in Corpus Christi, coached, programmed, measurable.
Real strength training for real adults. Barbell, kettlebell, and dumbbell work programmed in 6-to-8-week blocks by a Corpus Christi strength coach who's built lifetime PRs for hundreds of local lifters.
"Strength is the one thing you build in your 40s that makes your 70s better. Everything else is downstream of it."
, Alain Escobar, Head Coach
A coaching system, not a session count.
- 01
6, 8 Week Blocks
Every program has an intent. Intensification, accumulation, deload, test. Not random workouts.
- 02
Measured Progress
Every 8 weeks we retest. Strength numbers move on paper, that's the whole point.
- 03
Technique-First Coaching
Every lift coached in-person. Load only increases when technique is stable.
- 04
Full-Body Development
Not just squat and bench. Pulling, unilateral, and posterior chain work built in.

The 40-year-old rule
Every year after 40 without strength training costs you 3, 8% of your muscle. Two 45-minute lifts a week reverses it. This isn't a lifestyle choice, it's a health prescription.
What actually happens, week by week.
Teach the barbell
Squat, deadlift, press, row taught from the ground up. Load stays modest, patterns first.
First strength block
Progressive linear loading. Most beginners double their squat and deadlift numbers.
Real numbers
Bodyweight bench, 1.5x squat, 2x deadlift start becoming visible on the horizon for most adult lifters.
Compounding strength
Lifetime PRs, joints that feel younger than they did on day one, posture and confidence transformed.

Who our Corpus Christi strength clients are
Our strength room serves a wide range of lifters. First-time barbell athletes who've never squatted with load. Adults returning to strength after injuries or years off. Competitive powerlifters prepping for local and regional meets. Runners, cyclists, and endurance athletes adding strength as an anti-injury insurance policy. Women rebuilding after pregnancy. Men over 50 looking to add lean mass and protect joints.
Every lifter gets programming that matches their level and their goal. Beginners don't get thrown into an advanced 5/3/1 block. Advanced lifters aren't stuck doing beginner linear progression forever.

Who strength training is NOT for
Strength training is not the right fit for anyone unwilling to commit to a coached, progressive plan for at least three months. The neurological gains show up in weeks; the visible, meaningful strength gains show up on the far side of a full block. Members hoping to try three sessions and decide are always disappointed, that's cardio dabbling, not strength training.
It's also not the right fit for adults in the acute phase of injury without physician clearance. If a shoulder or back is currently painful with normal daily movement, we'll refer to a good local PT first and pick up the strength progression once the tissue is ready.

The lifts that matter and why
Squat variations, back squat, front squat, safety-bar squat, split squat, build the strongest leg, glute, and posterior chain of any exercise category. They also protect knees and hips long-term when coached correctly.
Deadlift variations, conventional, sumo, trap-bar, Romanian, build hamstring, glute, and back strength that carries over to every athletic movement and every daily task that involves picking things up.
Press variations, bench, overhead, incline, dumbbell, build shoulder health and upper-body strength.
Pull variations, pull-up, chin-up, row, are the most underrated category. Balancing pressing with pulling is what keeps shoulders healthy over decades.
Every AE Fitness strength program touches all four categories every week.

How our strength programming is structured
We run 6-to-8 week blocks. Each block has an intent, hypertrophy (add muscle), max strength (get stronger), or peaking (test PRs). Every block starts with a diagnostic session and ends with a retest.
Between blocks we deload and reassess. This structured cycle is why our lifters keep adding weight to the bar year after year, while most self-programmed gym-goers plateau in the first six months.
The exact intent of your block depends on your goal. A powerlifter peaking for a meet gets a very different block than a runner adding strength for Beach to Bay, and both differ from a 55-year-old rebuilding lean mass. Same programming principles, different application.

Strength training for endurance athletes
Corpus Christi has one of the most active running and cycling communities in South Texas, Beach to Bay, Half Marathon, Turkey Trot, Padre Island rides. The number one reason these athletes get hurt or plateau is that they skip strength training.
We build strength blocks specifically for runners and cyclists, hip and hamstring strength, single-leg work, calf loading, and core anti-rotation work. Two 45-minute strength sessions per week is enough to dramatically reduce injury rates and improve race performance.

Women's strength training in Corpus Christi
Women make up a large share of our strength room, and the biggest misconception we correct in year one is the fear of 'getting bulky.' Building the kind of muscle mass that changes silhouette in undesirable ways takes years of dedicated eating and lifting at intensities recreational athletes rarely touch. What actually happens is women get stronger, leaner, more athletically shaped, and dramatically more confident in the room.
Programming for women isn't fundamentally different, the physics of a barbell don't change, but volume, recovery, and the specific emphasis on hip strength, upper-body pulling, and post-pregnancy core sequencing get tuned to the athlete. See our Women's Fitness page for a deeper look.

Strength training over 40, 50, and 60
The most important strength training population in Corpus Christi is the 40-plus crowd, and it's the group most underserved by big-box gyms. The narrative that 'you can't get strong after 50' is provably false in our building. We regularly see 55- and 65-year-olds hit lifetime PRs on squat and deadlift after a year of coached programming.
The difference is that programming has to respect recovery. Volume drops slightly, warm-up gets longer, deload weeks are non-negotiable, and single-joint accessory work becomes as important as the main lift. Load progresses more patiently, and lasts longer.

Powerlifting meet prep
We coach lifters through local, regional, and USAPL/USPA sanctioned powerlifting meets. Meet prep is typically an 8, 16 week peaking block layered on top of an existing strength base, with weekly attempts strategy, weight-cut planning where applicable, and race-day walkthrough.
First-time meet athletes get a specific meet-day rehearsal, command timing, warm-up room logistics, spotter and loader interaction, and attempt selection. The goal of a first meet isn't a max total; it's leaving the platform with confidence and three white lights on every lift.

Frequently asked questions.
I've never used a barbell. Can I start strength training here?
Yes. Every new strength client is taught the barbell lifts from the ground up. No prior experience needed.
How often should I strength train?
For most adults, 2, 4 sessions per week. Runners and endurance athletes typically do 2. Serious strength athletes do 3, 4.
Will strength training make me bulky?
No. Building substantial muscle mass takes years of dedicated eating and lifting. What happens for the average adult is you get stronger, leaner, and better-shaped.
Can I strength train around a bad back or bad knees?
Yes. That's exactly the population that benefits most from coached strength work. Programs are built around your history, not against it.
Do you offer powerlifting meet prep?
Yes. We prep lifters for local, regional, and USAPL/USPA meets.
How long until I see strength gains?
Beginners typically add 30, 50% to their major lifts in the first 6 months. Intermediate lifters see 5, 15% per year. Advanced lifters progress in smaller, meaningful increments.
Can I strength train and lose fat at the same time?
Yes, this is the pairing that produces the best-looking, most durable body composition change. See our Weight Loss Coaching page for the combined framework.
Do you coach Olympic lifting (clean, jerk, snatch)?
Yes at the general-strength level. Athletes chasing competitive weightlifting numbers can be referred to Olympic lifting specialists, we'll be honest about the fit.
Do you have women-only strength coaching?
We coach mixed groups by default, but women-only introductions and consults are available on request. Our roster is roughly half women.
What equipment do you have?
Full competition-quality racks, calibrated bumpers, safety bar, trap bar, glute-ham developer, sleds, ski ergs, rowers, and dumbbells to real strength weights. Nothing plastic. Nothing decorative.
Can teenagers strength train here?
Yes, with age-appropriate coaching and parental consent. Coached strength training is one of the safest, highest-value interventions for a young athlete, and it beats unsupervised YouTube programming every time.
Do you program strength for CrossFit athletes and HYROX competitors?
Yes. Sport-specific strength blocks for HYROX athletes live under our HYROX Training page; general functional-fitness strength blocks are common.
